One Big Beautiful Bill Act

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the massive federal tax-and-spending package signed into law in July 2025, has initiated the biggest transformation of America’s social safety net in a generation.

Changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the nation’s largest food aid program, impose eligibility requirements that could see millions of people cast out of the program and requires states to bear a greater share of the burden for providing aid.

POLITICO’s Marcia Brown traveled to Maine, where she spoke with lawmakers struggling to stretch the state budget to accommodate the new burdens, bureaucrats and advocacy group workers trying to help clients navigate the new reality and aid recipients facing the prospect of losing a vital lifeline.
