What to Expect from the Upcoming Trump-Xi Summit
Thursday, May 14, 2026 | 1PM ET
President Donald Trump takes off soon for Beijing for a much-anticipated in-person meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, where the two leaders are expected to extend a trade truce reached last October in South Korea. The Trump administration is pressing China to commit to buying more U.S. agriculture products and Boeing planes, but has downplayed the prospects of a major shift in trade relations. Also on the agenda: the war in the Middle East and how Xi might be able to help broker an agreement to re-open the Strait of Hormuz. Taiwan is another perennial subject the two leaders are likely to discuss.
Hear from some of POLITICO’s top reporters on the White House, trade and foreign affairs about what they are watching as Trump and Xi meet May 14 and 15.
